Get Your Foot-in-the Door

November 27th, 2011

Are you tired of spending hours upon hours every week prospecting only to come up short time and time again? Does it seem like everything you do to turn a prospect into a customer backfires? Are you running out of answers?

If you are in sales and this sounds familiar I may have an answer for you – or at least a viable solution worth trying.

Let me ask you a question. Have you ever sent someone a branded promotional item after you contacted the person for the first time? If you answered no, chances are you think it is an unnecessary expense or a waste of time. I’m here to tell you otherwise. I’m here to tell you it works. How so?

Let’s start with a real life scenario. After a half hour of cold calling you’ve piqued someone’s interest, and they have asked you send them information about your company. You oblige and quickly fire off an e-mail, which includes your contact information. One week later you decide to follow up and reach the person’s voicemail. You leave a message and wait for a call back. The call never comes.

So what happened? Did you do something wrong? Not necessarily. Perhaps the person you are attempting to reach doesn’t need what you are selling at this particular moment. Think about it why they don’t return your call. If you don’t need a product or service are you going to go out of your way to contact the salesman? Probably not.

But here’s the kicker…when it is time to order wouldn’t you want your name and phone number in front of the buyer’s face? That e-mail you sent six months ago has been deleted and so has your voicemail. The reality is this person has no idea you exist, unless you sent them a useful promotional product they use on a weekly basis.

Week after week they tore pages from a Post-it Note Cube with your contact info on it (heck…it’s been on their desk for half a year). Think about the number of impressions you’ve created. The cost amounts to pennies, if that.

Post it notes

Lest I forget, when you send someone a promotional item it gives you another reason to call on them. “Hey Sue, I just wanted to touch base with you and make sure you received the pens I sent.”
