Farfromboring Fund-raising Ideas for Sports Teams and Clubs

March 8th, 2012

Sports Seat CushionStadium Seat Cushions offer valuable advertising space for sports teams from elementary school up to the collegiate level. Local businesses advertise everywhere on campus: banners; programs and yearbooks; in the gymnasium, around the track and football stadium; the list goes on and on.

When it comes to fund-raising each team has its own priorities – and strategies for achieving its goals. There might be an out-of-state competition and the team needs funds for the hotel, food and busses or airfare. Maybe the uniforms are old. Maybe the locker rooms need refinishing. Maybe the equipment is outdated. Whatever the reason, fund-raising is integral to a program’s overall health.

For years, teams have relied on magazine subscriptions, car washes, candy sales, concession stand sales, traffic at the gate and merchandise. What if the program took a portion (or all) of the sales generated from car washing, candy and magazines and re-invested the money into purchasing more merchandise (apparel and promotional sports items) that can be re-sold for a profit.

Let’s examine one way a team can generate a few thousand dollars.

The key is to find an item that can house multiple advertisers. Take stadium seat cushions, for instance. Stadium seat cushions offer valuable advertising space. Local businesses advertise everywhere on campus: banners; programs and yearbooks; in the gymnasium, around the track and football stadium; the list goes on and on. They also advertise on stadium seat cushions. Why? Because the end recipient typically holds onto them for years, which means, they are like a walking billboard every time its brought out of the house.

When it comes to the imprint area, you can generally fit 4-6 business card style ads on the back of a stadium cushion. Let’s talk numbers. If each cushion runs you in the neighborhood of $10-$12 bucks, one advertiser alone will pay for the item, considering you charge said business a like amount to have an ad on each cushion.

Figuring the team orders 100 stadium seat cushions at $12.00 each, the order will total $1,200 plus a set-up charge (1 color imprint) and freight. Maybe you’ll even throw in free season tickets to all the football games as a perk.

So all the remaining stadium cushions are pure profit…money in the bank. Think about how long it would take you to sell the advertising space on these cushions versus washing 120 cars.
