Put a (Key) Ring on It

Posted on 05/06/14
Key RingWhat better way to advertise your brand than with something most people use every day? Whether used for your home, workplace, car, or locker at the gym, an eye-catching key ring will help keep keys organized. A key ring can also be used for much more than meets the eye. Get creative by using yours in a new and practical way - and read on to learn more about the history of the key ring.

Where the Key Ring Came From

Inventor F. J. Loudin initially created the key ring in 1894 to keep keys together. This invention also had an added bonus of deterring pickpockets, because the key ring could be attached to part of a person's clothing. These could be personalized as well; key ring bearers often used fobs, buttons, and other decorations to make them more identifiable.

As it turns out, the term "key ring" is fully interchangeable with "split ring" when made of metal. Over the past century and then some, the key ring has even been picked up by designer brands that have created unique and prominent designs. The term "keychain" is also often used in the place of "key ring," though this word refers specifically to the small ornamental object that adorns the key ring to hold keys together.

In the corporate world, businesses began to take advantage of the key ring in the 1950s and 60s, placing promotional fobs on inexpensive key rings to gain more visibility.

Alternative Uses for Key Rings

Key rings come in a myriad of shapes, colors, and styles, so why waste an especially attractive key ring on… well… keys? There are many cool and creative ways to use your key ring that will really show it off:

  • Need a zipper pull that reflects your personality? Find a small key ring adorned with a sparkly flower, smiley face, or a favorite superhero to attach to an existing zipper. Thread the ring through the hole of the zipper tab to liven up a backpack or tote bag.
  • For pants that need a little pizzazz, find key rings you love and attach them to the belt loops.
  • Planning a party for your kids? If you predict numerous helium balloons in your future, don't bother with plastic balloon weights. Attach heavier key rings to the balloon strings so they'll stay on the ground - and hand them out as party favors.
