Posted on 04/28/14
Bean Bag BuddiesBean-stuffed toy animals have been gracing the shelves and toy cupboards of households for many years. Do you remember the Beanie Baby craze in the ‘90s? You might be surprised to learn the craze has never really gone away, which offers a unique opportunity to promote your brand in a way that everyone, both young and old, can enjoy. Let's take a look at the history of beanie toys - where and how they originated - and learn why they became such a big hit around the world.

A Beanie Background

Historians believe the first plush toys may date as far back as ancient Egypt. Though there is no physical evidence to support this theory, there are indications plush animals were used for ceremonial purposes that are found in ancient paintings and hieroglyphics. Fast forward a few millennia and we arrive squarely in the 1830s, where we learn the inspiration behind toy stuffed animals comes from taxidermy. Then, plush toys took the shape of homemade animals. They resembled sock puppets and were filled with straw, rather than beans.

Half a century later, German factories began to produce toys that looked far more like the stuffed animals we know today. These were expensive to produce, although eventually technology allowed for the use of synthetic materials, which reduced the cost. Filling animals with beans was a common practice in the early days of factory-made toys that were constructed to be tossed into the air for other kinds of game play. Let's not forget the famous story about the creation of the teddy bear by President Theodore Roosevelt!

The inventor H. Ty Warner created the original Beanie Babies. His idea was to create cuddly plush toys that were small enough to hold and inexpensive enough to be bought by children using allowance money. To make them soft and floppy, he under-stuffed them with small bean-shaped polyester bits, and debuted the first nine Beanie Babies in the early 1990s. The rest, as they say, is history.
