Highlighter-image-back-to-schoolBack to school season is in full swing, which means it's time to shop for new school supplies. Pencils, pens, erasers, markers, binders, and notebooks… the list may seem endless, but having the right supplies can help set a student up for a successful school year. It's also prime time for businesses to leverage this opportunity to provide useful promotional products that empower students for success.

A Concise History of School Supplies
School supplies have evolved considerably throughout history - and will inevitably continue to change in the future. Here's a quick look at how far supplies have come:

  • In 1450, the first recorded school supply was the hornbook. A hornbook was made from a wooden tablet, with an added handle for children to carry them more easily. Serving as a primer for study, the hornbook was printed with the alphabet, prayers, and other inscriptions, which were then covered with a clear sheet made from horn.
  • Fast-forward to the 19th century. Back then, children received their educations largely in one-room schoolhouses, and used writing slates, chalk, and maybe a few books strapped together with leather. These youngsters also carried lunch to school in tin pails (unlike our insulated lunchboxes today).
  • By the early-to-mid 20th century, paper and pencils became more commonplace. Students had more schoolbooks, but still used the leather belt for carrying them or held them by hand. Pee-Chee folders were also popularly used to keep school-related papers held together.
  • By the 1950s and 60s, paper tablets had become more popular, resulting in the widespread use of spiral notebooks with lined paper ever since. The 70s saw an influx of simple pocket calculators, which have given way to the scientific calculators now used by upper-level students. This decade also debuted the Trapper Keeper, a stylish way to keep items organized. Backpacks and book bags increased in popularity by the 1980s and are still popular today.

In addition to the items listed above, other excellent suggestions include: pencil sharpeners, mini staplers, lunchboxes, pencil cases, messenger bags, and more. Companies may also choose to offer stress-relieving items in fun back-to-school shapes, like school buses, cheerleaders or footballs.
