Environmentally Sound Water Bottles

Sporty woman reusable water bottleWater, water everywhere . . . but is it safe to drink?

Our body weight consists of about 60 percent water, which must be replenished on a regular basis. This fact leaves no question: Adequate water intake should be a daily priority. Although advice on how much water to consume varies among health experts and individual needs, recommendations average about 64 ounces of water per day for a healthy adult.

For those fortunate enough to have consistent and plentiful access to clean, drinkable water, meeting daily hydration needs shouldn't be complicated. However, recent research indicates that one of the most popular sources of water may not be as healthy as we think.

Why Bottled Water Isn't the Best Option

Popularized over the past couple of decades, bottled water has become a ubiquitous fixture in convenience stores, vending machines, and anywhere else that sells food and drink. As recently as 2009, Americans purchased 8.45 billion gallons of bottled water. At prices ranging from 300 to 2,000 times the cost of tap water, bottled water isn't just a bad value - it can also be hazardous to our health and the environment.

The next time you consider plunking down $1.50 on a bottle of water, consider the following:

Environmental impact. Plastic bottle production and transportation requires 32 to 54 million barrels of oil each year. Additionally, only 25 percent of plastic bottles are recycled, leaving the rest to languish in landfills and bodies of water.

Contaminants. Companies might claim that their bottled water is pure, but independent testing often proves otherwise.

BPAs. Short for bisphenol-a, this chemical has been identified in bottled water. BPAs may be linked to health problems such as cancer, infertility, diabetes, and birth defects.

What Are My Alternatives?

For those ready to kick the bottled water habit, reusable water bottles are an economical and environmentally-friendly option for toting drinkable water. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials to meet the needs of everyone from athletes to business professionals.

Types of reusable water bottles to consider include:

  • BPA-free plastic bottles. Manufactured without these potentially harmful chemicals, these reusable vessels can include built-in straws, drinking spouts, or screw-on caps.
  • Foldable plastic bottles. The perfect pack-and-go items, these thin pouches can be rolled up and stored when not in use.
  • Metal water bottles. Durable and often boasting distinctive designs, aluminum or stainless steel bottles will last for the long haul.

To quench your thirst, you don't need to spend much money, risk your health, or harm the environment. With a high-quality reusable water bottle, your motto will be: Have water, will travel!
