Why you should buy USA Made Promotional Products

The economic growth rate in China, the world’s second-largest economy, slowed to a 25-year low of 6.9% in 2015, challenging its dominant trade position. This dip, coupled with a shift away from manufacturing to services, opens the door for U.S. manufacturers. How do you take advantage of the opportunity? Here are seven tips and product ideas

  • Consider Price - While an American-made polo shirt might be too expensive to order stateside, paper goods such as fans, hats, signs, etc., are competitively priced.

  • Make Deadline - Ordering from U.S. manufacturers protects against missed in-hand dates. For example, a distributor ordered paper masks from overseas for an event. Unfortunately, the order was held up at port as the deadline loomed. The distributor called Lion Circle, who stepped up with a quick turn for a custom project. Develop relationships with manufacturers in the United States – they’ve got your back when time is of the essence.

  • Play the Custom Card - Usually the word “customization” is equated with “overseas.” Now, U.S. manufacturers can compete for custom projects that previously had to be sourced abroad. You can design a unique product solution for your client, ensure a quick turn and lock in orders for the future.

  • Meet the Standard - According to the Federal Trade Commission, “Made in USA” means that “all or virtually all” of the product has been made in America. That is, all significant parts, processing and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. Keep that in mind as you choose a decorator. Some domestic manufacturers, such as Lion Circle, even offer decorating services. Ask about digital printing for small or mixed runs with detailed full color images.

  • Stay Safety Minded - Kid-focused brands and environmentally minded organizations want to protect their customers and causes by using certifiably safe products. Ask your supplier for proof of product testing. Does the item meet the standards of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA)? By law, these products are required to have a job number, manufacturer’s name and city/state in which the item was made.

  • Target Hot Markets - Unions and politicians are two obvious choices. If they’re caught using overseas products while talking about protecting American jobs, they risk backlash. Also, reach out to small businesses that tout their own use of locally produced ingredients or materials. Other key targets: schools, banks, government and public services, e.g. police and firemen.

  • Promote Packaging - Food packaging in particular should be made and printed in the USA so the safest materials and inks are used. Medical and pharmaceutical providers are another market that seeks specialty packaging with an American-made pedigree.
